LAST UPDATE: 2/24/2006 8:57:11 PM
"We're just turning it up, haven't seen anything yet."
Turning up the heat on a cold case. Butler County's Sheriff makes sure people know he's ready to pay big for the right clues. Butler County's Cold Case Squad has a so called person of interest in an eight year old murder mystery. Laney Gwinner disappeared in December of 1997. Her body surfaced in the Ohio River a month later. The Cold Case detective who took over the case tells Local 12's Deborah Dixon, he thinks someone in Butler County holds a huge clue and doesn't even know it.
We begin with new information in a cold murder case that you will only see on Local 12. The face of Laney Gwinner looks out at drivers on Route 4, her face and an offer of ten thousand dollars to catch her killer. Sheriff Richard Jones said there are people with information about the prime suspect in the case.
Sheriff Richard Jones, Butler County: "We want them to know, want them to see, today this case is getting close on their heels, we're not going to let go."
After playing pool, Laney Gwinner walked out of the Gilmore Bowling Lanes on Route 4 and vanished. It's believed she was abducted outside the lanes, not by someone she knew, but by someone who wanted her. She was likely taken right here in parking lot. The person drove Gwinner's car into the Great Miami or Ohio River. Laney was dead before she and her car were put in the watery grave. Frank Smith said her killer then called someone to pick him up and take him back to his car.
"Would like that person to research their mind back 8 years ago just before Christmas, got a phone call to request a ride or if they picked up that person, brought him back here to Route 4 and Gilmore Road, we want to talk to him."
Angie Smith Hysell, Gwinner Friend: "I see it as a closing of the book. I really do think it's what needs to get this case closed and put Laney to rest in the way she deserves."
The person of interest, do you think he's going to drive by and see the billboard?
"I'm confident he will."
Deborah Dixon, Local12.
Investigator Smith encourages people to call him even if they aren't certain their information is important. His number is 785-1236. CrimeStoppers will also take calls on clues to unsolved crimes at 352-3040. Tipsters are identified by code numbers, not names.
