VEVAY, Ind. -- Witnesses described a "horrible" scene after a minivan carrying six family members collided with a Ford Bronco carrying two teens on a winding country road, News 5 reported.
"You could hear people screaming in pain," said Violet Kelly. "It was just chaos. It sounded like a war zone."
"The little boy kept saying he didn't want to die. He kept asking us, 'Is my mom and dad dead?' What do you say?" said Rhonda Norfleet.
The crash killed a young mother and two of her three children Wednesday afternoon.
The children's father and their grandmother are clinging to their lives in comas.
The couple's other child is hospitalized but apparently out of danger.
The mother was driving the minivan, taking the father to work at Belterra Casino, where he is a backjack dealer, when the crash happened, a family friend told News 5.
Dead are 21-year-old Nina Craig, 3-year-old Devin Lee Anderson and 10-month-old Jada Anderson.
The father, Derick Anderson, 24, is in critical condition at University Hospital.
His mother, Melinda Anderson, is in critical condition at University of Louisville Hospital.
The couple's 6-year-old son, Derrick, is listed in fair condition at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.
The mother and father were going to be married, a friend told News 5. They grew up in Colerain Township and had been together since high school.
"They have a great family. They were just two kids trying to make it," a friend, Jill Coleman, said.
The Bronco flipped over and left a 15-year-old passenger, Nika Bastin, in critical condition at Kosair Children's Hospital.
The 19-year-old driver, Joe Moorling, is being treated at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. His condition has not been released.
Police said they are still investigating what caused the crash but they don't believe speed was a factor. The accident happened on Tapps Ridge Road, near Harry Tapp Road.
James Meyer said he was sitting on his front porch when it happened and told News 5 it sounded like a bomb.
"I mean, it was head-on. 'Boom.' I never saw a car like that so tore up," Meyer said.
Seven people were trapped in the wreckage of the two vehicles, everyone but 6-year-old Derrick. There were so many victims that the first people at the scene said they didn't know whom to try to help first.
"You just go around checking pulses," said Norfleet, a nurse.
"The van was so mangled, I don't know how any of them got out," another witness said.
Another driver, Bob Wright, was shaken by what he saw.
"It's just terrible. All of a sudden you're driving along and this happens. Horrible. It's something you'll take to your grave," said Wright.
