CINCINNATI -- A 19-year-old man is accused of raping and beating an 18-month-old girl last week. Now the victim's mother is breaking her silence and speaking out about the suspect -- a man she once trusted.
Kaylee Ann Schnurr began walking about three months ago. Now, instead of watching her learn to run and walk, her family is making plans for her funeral, News 5's Juliette Vara reported.
Marigrace Schnurr held her daughter and sang their favorite song as she died.
"My favorite song to her was 'you are my sunshine,'" Schnurr said. "Because she really was. I just stayed by her bedside and cried and cried. (I) just prayed to God that he would give me a miracle."
It was easy for Kaylee's grandmother to remember, but it's hard to forget the brutal way her only grandchild died, Vara reported.
"I put her little pony together just a couple days before she was taken away from me," said Doretta Schnurr, the girl's grandmother. "I cannot get over the devastation this guy has brought to this family and I will never be able to."
Police believe Marigrace Schnurr's boyfriend of two months, Matthew Carovillano, is responsible for the heartache. He was someone the family quickly trusted, but Marigrace said he had everyone fooled.
"He came off as a really nice guy," she said. "She called him dada. He used to play peek-a-boo with her."
Carovillano is accused of raping and beating Kaylee last Wednesday.
"It makes me sick to my stomach. She did nothing to deserve such brutality. I don't understand it," Marigrace Schnurr said. "I will never recover from this -- ever."
Carovillano is being held at the Hamilton County Justice Center on a $1.6 million bond. He was charged with assault and rape, but police said additional charges may be filed.
A fund was set up to help pay for Kaylee's funeral expenses. Donations can be made at any Fifth Third Bank.
Kaylee's cousins and their friends are raising funeral funds by holding a lemonade stand from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. through Friday at 3561 Locust Lane in Green Township.
