Unrestrained Toddler Falls Into River From Mom's Truck POSTED: 10:38 am EDT July 28, 2005 GARY, Ind. -- Divers have resumed their search for a 2-year-old girl who plunged 40 feet into a northwestern Indiana river Wednesday. Jatama Greene was apparently not wearing restraints when she was thrown from a window of the truck her mother was driving Wednesday night as it hit a retaining wall on a highway ramp over the Grand Calumet River. Witnesses said the toddler was moving after she hit the water. A man who drove up after the accident jumped into the river but the strong current kept him from reaching the girl. Others kept the mother from trying to search the water herself. Divers were able to start their search Wednesday night before resuming Thursday morning. A woman who was driving behind the truck said she called 911, but she said the dispatcher accused her of making a phony emergency call. www.channelcincinnati.com/news/4780606/detail.html

Jatama Greene was apparently not wearing restraints when she was thrown from a window of the truck her mother was driving Wednesday night as it hit a retaining wall on a highway ramp over the Grand Calumet River. Witnesses said the toddler was moving after she hit the water. Divers spent several hours in the Grand Calumet River near Gary, Ind., but found no signs of Greene. Authorities believe the child is dead. Officials said rescuers will continue searching for the toddler's body by boat and helicopter. A driver who claims to have seen the accident said she immediately dialed 911 on her cell phone. But she said the dispatcher accused her of placing a phony emergency call.
