Recently the Ohio Legislature made significant changes to improve Ohio's Sex Offender Registration and Notification (SORN) law. I am sure we can all agree that the changes will help make Ohioans safer. As part of the new law, my office created this statewide database, eSORN or Electronic Sex Offender Registration and Notification, to effectively track sex offenders throughout Ohio.
This database is linked to all 88 of Ohio's sheriff's offices and all 32 correctional facility records offices operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. The purpose of eSORN is to provide one location for all of Ohio's law enforcement officials to freely share information on registered sex offenders. Some portions of this database are also open to private citizens who want to be aware of sex offenders who live close to their home or their child's school.
Some of the details of the new SORN law, including the new categories of sex offenders and notification requirements, are somewhat complex. Also available on this website is a concise breakdown of the various changes to Ohio's SORN law.
Each sex offender who is legally required to register must provide the county sheriff with his or her name and address, his or her classification, the offense(s) for which he or she was convicted and have a picture taken and be fingerprinted. The sheriff's office must then provide the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation with that information to store and to post on eSORN.
The information available on this website is beneficial to all Ohioans. Sharing the information among law enforcement officials and agencies will help protect all Ohioans from dangerous sex offenders throughout the state.
Sincerely,
Jim Petro
